Factors Affecting Boat Transport Costs
When planning the transport of a boat or yacht, several factors come into play that can significantly impact the overall cost. Understanding these factors can help you prepare better for the transportation process and manage your expectations regarding expenses.
- Size and Dimensions: The overall size, including width, height, and weight of your boat, dictates the need for specialized handling and equipment, and the routing which significantly influencing transport costs. Providing accurate measurements of your boat ensures proper permit acquisition and avoids delays, thereby controlling unexpected costs.
- Need for Escorts and Pole Cars: Oversized boats may require escort vehicles or pole cars to manage traffic and navigate roads safely, adding to transportation expenses.
- Bridge Surveys: If your route includes low clearance bridges, a bridge survey might be needed to ensure the boat can pass safely, potentially increasing costs.
- Special Trailer Requirements: Boats with personal trailers are cheaper to transport compared to those needing a rented trailer, which incurs additional fees.
- Route and Distance: The length and complexity of the route, including any tolls and permits required, bridge surveys directly affect the cost of transporting your boat.
- Preparation and Permits: Proper preparation and the costs of necessary permits for transporting oversized loads can vary, influencing the total expense of the move.
Preparing your Boat
for Shipping
- Wash the boat’s exterior and look for any signs of damage; take pictures to keep a record of the defects for future reference
- Clean the interior and remove all personal items before you transport a boat; factory-installed parts are the only items that should remain in the vessel
- Secure all loose parts and gear above and below the deck; if you want to dismantle any parts, take pictures to keep as a reminder for making reassembly easier
- Seal hatches, latch cabin windows, and close the cabin doors firmly
- Empty the boat’s water and fuel tank and remove all drain plugs
- Switch off all power, disconnect batteries, and secure all cables
- Use insulator wax on chrome and stainless steel parts and cover the vessel with a shrink wrap before shipping a boat for added protection
Frequently Asked Questions

We specialize in transporting a wide range of watercraft, from small fishing boats to large yachts and sailboats.
How do I prepare my boat for transport?
Ensure all loose items are secured or removed, personal belongings are taken out, and any detachable parts like sails or masts are safely stowed.
What is required for an accurate transport quote?
Please provide detailed dimensions of your boat (length, width, height, and weight), if the boat has its own trailer, the pickup and delivery locations, and any specific transport requirements you have.
Do you offer international boat transport services?
Yes, our sister company, Trans Global Auto Logistics, does and we’ll forward your request on to them.
Can you transport boats that don’t have a trailers?
Yes, these boats require a specialized trailer which more costly but can be done.
What happens if there is damage to my boat during transport?
We are fully insured, and any damages incurred during transport are covered; however, we also take all precautions to avoid any damage in the first place.
How long does boat transport take?
The duration depends on the distance, route specifics, weather conditions, and if the boat is oversized which limits the route it can take, times it can move, and speed it can be transported.
Are there any restrictions on the size of the boat you can transport?
There are restrictions based on road and bridge regulations; however, we can handle most size requirements through special arrangements and permits.
